The 3rd Annual Virtual Conference for Menstrual Hygiene Management in WASH in Schools
Wednesday 29 October 2014
The 3rd Virtual MHM (menstrual hygiene management) in WinS (WASH in Schools) is taking place on 29th October 2014. The conference will continue the effort to fill the gaps in the existing knowledge and advocacy around this important issue.
Menstruation is a complex issues that involves not just the management of the menstrual period but the need to address societal beliefs and taboos supporting the issue.
Good menstrual hygiene requires:
- access to information
- access to menstrual hygiene materials
- access to facilities that provide privacy for changing and washing
- access to water and soap
- access to disposal facilities
School girls and female teachers face many barriers to MHM in education settings including lack of adequate toilets or washing facilities. There is increasing recognition of the importance of exploring and addressing these barriers. WinS programmes are addressing adolescent girls’ needs in order to make a positive impact on girls’ school attendance and achievement.
